One night, in 1951, Burroughs and Vollmer were partying in Mexico City and decided to play a drunken game of "William Tell." She balanced a glass on her head and Burroughs took aim with a pistol. He fired, but the shot missed the glass and tore through Vollmer's forehead instead, killing her.
